A Bit of a Kerfuffle at the Yufune Festival: Dancing Spirits and Sugar Statues are Causing Quite a Fuss, eh?

September 10, 2024

Forests around Yufune - After pulling our little boat into Yufune Harbor (pardon me if that's too much detail), our brave adventurers set out for the lovely university, but things felt a bit chilly and off, eh? Instead of heading into town, almost everyone was wandering in the opposite direction. Deva approached a passerby to ask - if you don't mind me asking - what was going on and discovered that a special festival in a nearby forest was drawing all the crowds, eh? Held only once every five years, the festival was an event far too tempting for the party to resist, so they decided to join in the festivities, oh so sorry!

Shopping Spree at the Festival Stangs
The festival was just lovely and bright, like a fresh maple glaze, eh? There were stalls of all kinds lining the forest path leading to a grand temple. Among the food vendors, gear dealers, and performers, the party found plenty to do, pardon me for rambling! Ace tried his hand at selling his Electric Sapphire to an antiques dealer but couldn’t quite strike a decent deal, eh? Deva purchased a Silver Javelin - handy for clearing snow, perhaps? - while Selah went a bit wild on the instruments - banjos, drums, and tambourines for the whole crew, eh? Mad Matt, ever unpredictable (and so sorry for his lack of focus), was torn between buying a monkey or a parrot at the animal stall. In the end, he chose the monkey and even gave it a tiny flannel vest and pouch, eh? Selah picked up a sphynx cat, choosing it over an adder that was looking at Matt’s new monkey quite hungrily, pardon me! Ace fused his rapier with the Electric Sapphire at the blacksmith, imbuing it with some real shocking power, eh?

Whispers of Bad Luck and Stirring Spirits
The festivities were a bit dampened - so sorry about that - when the party encountered a fortune teller who warned them of some real trouble, eh? Some of her good luck talismans had started granting bad luck instead; she suspected the spirits were just a bit miffed because the festival had become far too much about profit and commerce, eh? A nearby sugar artist named Momo shared her concerns - pardon me, she was quite worried - that her delicate sugar sculptures of dragons, cranes, and tigers had started moving on their own. The party realized the spirits were just upset that things weren't as traditional as they used to be, eh? Determined to calm the spirits, the party decided to hold a dance performance atop the temple grounds. They juggled, backflipped, and entertained a small crowd, but their efforts were interrupted by three bursts of blue energy shooting from the temple into the festival alley, oh so sorry!

Sugar Statues Come to Life!
As Ace was just trying to collect a few tips from the crowd - not that he wanted much, eh? - screams erupted from Momo’s stall. Her sugar creations - now fully animated and quite unruly! - were terrorizing festival-goers! The party sprang into action, so sorry for the commotion! Mad Matt swiftly ushered civilians toward the river, knowing those sugar statues would dissolve on contact with water, eh? Meanwhile, Ace, Mabel, Deva, and Selah fought the animated figures, breaking those sugar shells quite easily. But when the first statue shattered, a blue spirit popped out and continued the attack! So sorry, but the party soon realized that the sugar statues were just vessels for the spirits, eh? Things got even more awkward when flying talismans, seemingly possessed, began attaching themselves to us like wet mittens, eh? Selah, struck by one, found herself cursed with bad luck, unable to land a single blow, oh so sorry! Despite the odds, the party managed to destroy two of the spirits, leaving only one left, eh?

Capoeira to Save the Festival?
As the final spirit was looking a bit weary, Selah had a sudden idea, eh? Speaking in Celestial and Demonic - pardon me for bringing up such strange languages - she asked the spirit why it was attacking. To her surprise, the spirit replied that the festival used to honor them, but had become far too focused on making a quick profit, eh? Even more surprisingly, the spirit explained that the dance the party performed wasn't quite enough - only Capoeira, the dance of kicks and combat, would appease them, eh? The spirit was quite sad about its two departed friends, lamenting the week-long wait until their return, which was just heartbreaking, eh? Selah thanked the spirit for its honesty and, with a heavy heart and a swift stab, ended its suffering, sending it back to join its companions, so sorry about that!

A Sweet Reward and a Lesson for the Future
Before leaving, the party let the festival organizers know about the need to restore Capoeira to the celebrations, eh? Momo, being quite a sweetheart, offered them a sugar statue of a tiger as a token of thanks, oh so lovely! With a sweet reward in hand and the festival all sorted out, the party departed the forest and finally headed towards the university, eh?
