Helberskon Harbour– So sorry to interrupt, but after navigating our way across the Triangle, the crew of the Stolen Property pulled into the port city of Helberskon, eh? It’s a lovely, bustling little hub nestled right in the centre of a crescent-shaped island. Just look at Flame Island looming over the waves with all that smoky weather - a bit much, isn't it? Sorry if that sounds a bit grim.

A Volcano, A Sacrifice, and a Rather Intimidating Fellow, If You Don’t Mind Me Saying, Eh?

A Chaotic Arrival in Helochon (Sorry about the mess!)
We didn't mean to be a bother, but the crew was just so excited to explore the city and see those massive statues in the marketplace, eh? Among all the wonderful things, there were these horse-drawn carriages, and Selah, bless her heart, decided to try her hand at driving one with all this enthusiasm. And, oh gosh, she wasn't very good at it - so sorry to that other driver! She bumped right into another carriage and then just... well, she hopped out, eh? Luckily, not too many folks saw the mishap, so we didn't have to pay a big fine, thank goodness.
While wandering about the market, we happened to overhear a bit of a tense moment between Mayor Holger and a lady named Gutrune. It turns out, her ten-year-old daughter, Astrid, had been chosen as a sacrifice to the volcano - an old pact from centuries ago to keep the city safe, eh? Every ten years, someone is chosen by fate, their hair turning red and their sleepwalking leading them toward Flame Island, never to return. It’s all quite heavy, sorry to bring it up.
The mayor, much to our surprise, had actually lost his own son, Sigurd, to the volcano once before, eh? His belief in the ritual was still very much there, and he reminded Gutrune that ten years ago, she had supported the sacrifice of another boy, Thorably... I mean, Thorsten. Now that it was her own kin, she’d changed her tune, poor thing.
Despite how heavy the tradition is, Selah and the rest of us couldn't quite accept such a grim fate without asking a few questions, eh? We followed Gutrune back to her place and met Astrid, a lovely girl who - contrary to what her mother was saying - seemed much better than ever. She spoke of nice, warm dreams and didn't seem to notice the danger at all, bless her.
Determined to find out what was really going on, we decided to set sail for Flame Island right away, if you don't mind us rushing off.
A City Under Watchful Eyes
Now, we didn't mean any trouble, but when we got back to the docks, we found our ship all surrounded by soldiers, eh? As Marina tried to have a polite little chat with a local bread seller (who, honestly, makes the most wonderful bread, so sorry if I'm biased), it became clear that talking about the sacrifices is a bit of a taboo subject - spoken of only in whispers, eh? To challenge the ritual was to risk the volcano’s wrath, which would be quite a bother.
Meanwhile, Selah tried her best to bluff her way past the guards, claiming she was the former captain, eh? Unfortunately, the guards were being quite firm about speaking with the current captain. When she tried to suggest the captain was perhaps a bit hard of hearing, a telepathic guard stepped forward, ready to chat directly into the captain’s mind. How awkward, eh?
Mad Matt’s Masterclass in Piracy
Using that telepathic connection to our advantage - if you can call it that, sorry - Matt hatched a bit of an audacious plan. He spun a tale that he wasn't just travelling, but was actually a pirate, and the scout for an entire fleet, eh? He told them if he didn’t report back soon, the whole city might be in for a bit of a rough time the next day. The terrified guard, realizing this was a bit much for his pay grade, suggested we meet with the mayor, eh?
Matt declined, sorry about that! Instead, he showed off those monstrous tentacle hands of his, making it quite clear that negotiations were over. With a bit of an intimidating display, he made sure the guards released the ship immediately. As we set sail toward Flame Island, the shaken guards waved us off, still looking a bit rattled by Matt’s threats, eh?
"Prepare your defences," Matt called back as the ship pulled away. "I might return in a day’s time! Sorry for the trouble!"
Fireball Gazette Exclusive – The Elder’s Teatime
The grand oak table in the Helberskon Library was set with some lovely steaming herbal tea and delicate pastries, eh? As the town elders gathered for their afternoon chat, the air was thick with the scent of parchment, ink, and history.
"It’s happening again. Another child chosen, another mother in despair. You’d think Gutrune of all people would understand, eh?"
"Understand? Ten years ago, she was the loudest voice demanding Thorsten be sent to the volcano without delay! And now that it's her Astrid, she had a change of heart."
"That’s always the way of things. Easy to call for sacrifice when it’s not your own kin, eh?"
They sipped their tea in thoughtful silence before Elder Henrik leaned forward, tapping his spoon against his saucer - so polite, eh?
"Holger understands. He always has. He sent his own son, didn’t he? That’s why the people trust him – he doesn’t bend, even when it costs him everything."
"And the city still stands because of it. We honour the pact, and the volcano sleeps. That’s just how things are, eh?"
Outside, a distant bell rang from the docks. The elders didn't pay it much mind, their thoughts still turned toward the uneasy future, eh?
"Have you seen the flames?"
“The flames?”
"On Flame Island. Some nights, there are flickers, just at the peak. Not from the lava – higher, where no fire should be, eh?"
A hush fell over the table. No one spoke for a long moment, the only sound being the gentle clink of porcelain, eh?
"We don’t go to Flame Island."
"No. We certainly don't. Sorry about that."
And with that, the elders went back to their tea, the conversation drifting to safer topics, while unspoken fears smouldered like embers in the dark, eh?
