A Bit of a Kerfuffle: Undead Minotaur Causes Rather Unpleasant Scene in Cathedral!

6 August 2024

Roc’s Nest Tavern, Emberglow Forest – Following a rather splendid victory in the Tristrike Clash tournament, our intrepid - if slightly disorganized - adventurers were enjoying a well-earned celebratory pint at the Roc's Nest Tavern when things became quite inconvenient. With Sonia departing the group (leaving the rest of the lot in a bit of a muddle regarding who should inherit her Longsword and that rather lovely Potion of Giant Size), the formidable pirate Cordelia "The Lioness" delivered some rather unwelcome news: pirate hunters from Port Elgin were approaching. Not wanting to cause an undignified scene, the group made a hasty exit from Goldenbank, picking up a new companion, Ace, for a reasonable fee, provided he didn't mind the lack of proper tea breaks.

A Bit of a Shipwreck and a Rather Warm Welcome
As they sailed eastward, Mad Matt’s unfortunate preoccupation with his flask rather than the helm led to a bit of a mishap, resulting in an undignified crash near Emberglow Thicket. After being greeted by two rather startled fishermen, Max and Florian, the crew was hailed as "Saviors" - which was quite lovely, really - and escorted to the village, where a most disagreeable situation awaited. The village elder, Edouard, speaking with a most charming accent, explained that a terribly rude wizard had essentially stolen their water well, leaving nothing but a barren circle of magic. In exchange for sorting out this unpleasantness and restoring the well, the villagers offered to repair the crew’s ship, adorn new sails with a flaming horse motif (very stylish), and provide Max and Florian as rowers, assuming they didn't mind a bit of rowing in the damp weather.

A Stealthy Approach (Or Not)
Determined to resolve the matter, the adventurers trekked through a stunning - if slightly chilly - autumn forest toward the abandoned cathedral where the wizard resided. Sensing that an ambush would be quite improper, Selah led the party across a river via stepping stones rather than using the obvious bridge, attempting a much more civilized approach. Unfortunately, their attempt at a quiet arrival was cut short when Ace, attempting to sneak closer, accidentally caused quite a stir. The wizard, clearly lacking any sense of decorum, retreated into the cathedral and summoned a towering Minotaur Skeleton and a legion of undead who, frankly, had no regard for standing in an orderly queue.

A Rather Rowdy Skirmish with the Cathedral Guardian
Through Magic Missiles, flying javelins, and arrows, Ace deftly dashed about, attempting to impale skeletons with his rapier as if he were merely tidying up a messy room. Mad Matt ran through the fray, seeking refuge behind some wooden stakes - a rather cramped way to wait for things to blow over, one must say. Selah, meanwhile, took the more scenic route around the outside of the cathedral and climbed onto the roof, gaining the high ground over the Minotaur staunchly guarding the entrance. She jumped down upon him, using gravity to shatter his left arm with her nunchaku - a bit of a bold move, that. Mad Matt then decided to hide in a nearby crate; he quite cleverly pierced small holes for his eyes and gun through the side, facing the enemy with a certain grim determination. As Selally clung onto the Minotaur's horns, Deva used her entangling magic to sprout vines below the beast and a nearby skeleton - an attempt at tidying up the battlefield. Although they failed to restrain the monsters, Tiyana managed to light the vines on fire, effectively roasting the intruders (a bit much, perhaps, but efficient). The Minotaur, clearly unamused by the heat, attempted a vicious rend with his Greataxe. Ace and Selah made sure to take evasive action - one must avoid being singed - but Mad Matt became trapped within his crate alongside a skeleton and tried to use the bones as cover. Deva, knowing that flimsy ribs are hardly a proper shield against a Greataxe, used her Thorn Whip to pull the crate and its inhabitants away from the fray. When the Minotaur's Greataxe rent the air, only a skeleton remained in the area, which was promptly sliced in half - a most untidy end. After repeated pummeling from Selah and six Magic Missiles from Tiyana, the Minotaur was sufficiently weakened, allowing Ace to deliver a well-placed rapier strike that finally allowed the creature to depart its undeath. Mad Matt shed a single tear as his crate-mate skeleton and all remaining stragglers were finished off, bringing the unpleasantness to an end.
As the dust settled, Tiyana prepared to dispel the magic sealing the cathedral’s entrance. One can only wonder who the sinister wizard is awaiting them inside? Will the adventurers overcome whatever dark magic lies ahead, or will they require a proper cup of tea and a nap first? Stay tuned for the next thrilling chapter!
