Inderøy – The escapade pressed on as our party drifted into Inderøy, enduring a rather damp and inconvenient gale that was making a right mess of the harbour. Quite miraculously, their vessel remained entirely unscathed, being the only ship in sight that wasn't currently taking on water - a lovely bit of luck, really. Seeking shelter from the unpleasant weather, they popped into a nearby tavern, where they encountered two rather eccentric fellows: Caleb and Giacomo, both enjoying a spot of cold refreshment. A brief, somewhat awkward misunderstanding ensued, but after some polite apologies, the two eventually agreed to join the party - entirely without any charge, which was very kind of them.
It wasn't long before the barkeep shared some rather distressing news: several ships had run aground, and there were rumours that Harpies were at fault. The town elder, Ølødelgødel Blødelsødelstrøm, was particularly vexed because they’d been waiting in quite an orderly fashion for a shipment from Helberskon which, predictably, never arrived. The group, never ones to turn down a bit of a challenge (though perhaps they would have preferred a nice cup of tea instead), ventured out into the dreadful night to hunt the creatures and retrieve the lost cargo.

A Shipwreck and Shadows in the Resplendent Muck
After a three-hour trek through the muck, they arrived at a desolate beach littered with towering stone pillars and the remains of a beached ship. Using their Waterbreathing Algae - a lovely little gift from the Marid - they explored the wreck. Inside, they found nothing but bodies and an empty cargo hold, which was quite disheartening. As they resurfaced, a large shadow passed overhead - a rather ominous sign that the Harpies were nearby.
Further along the coast, the group found the other half of the wreckage, but again, no survivors to be seen. Then, they spotted it - a gargantuan bird’s nest perched atop one of the stone pillars. Ready to face the unpleasantness, they began their ascent; Giacomo (in his usual fashion) opted to be tossed like a salmon by Ace, landing within the ruins of a lighthouse. The rest of the party climbed with great care, until they were greeted by three rather menacing shadows: two smaller harpies and their leader, a monstrously large matriarch.
The Skirmish with Big Momma Harpy
The unpleasantness erupted as Caleb, ever the steady hand with a crossbow, landed a bolt into one of the smaller Harpies. Ace used the gloom to hide, preparing for a rather sneaky attack. Giacomo pondered changing into various animals but decided to stick to his human form to close the distance to the Harpies. Then, disaster struck - the Matriarch began to sing her bewitching song.
Ace and Selah, quite helplessly entranced by the melody, started walking toward the Harpy, entirely oblivious to the danger. Selah, now in a total trance, casually wandered off a cliff, but luckily had prepared for such mishaps by smearing climbing claw ointment on her hands and feet. She scrambled down the rock wall into the water, quite unharmed. Mabel quickly intervened, giving Ace a sharp slap to snap him out of it, while linking their life forces with a magical spell - a very sensible way to share any potential damage.
Amidst the chaos, Mad Matt battled the other small Harpy, while Giacomo and Mabel worked together to hold off the Matriarch’s rather aggressive attacks. The Matriarch unleashed deadly feather blades, one of which wounded Mabel quite severely, while Selah - snapping out of her trance mid-swim - caught one in the air and threw it back, striking the Matriarch.
As the fray continued, Ace unleashed a series of lethal strikes, frying one of the smaller Harpies with his electrified rapier. Meanwhile, Selah climbed from the water onto the rocks, biding her time for a proper ambush. Giacomo finally shifted into his preferred form - a hippo - and charged the Matriarch, though she retaliated fiercely with her razor-sharp claws. With Selah's swift strikes and Caleb’s steady rain of crossbow bolts, it was Ace’s trusty Balestrina that delivered the final blow, sending the Harpy Matriarch plummeting into the waves below.
A Bit of a Dark Twist
After the harrowing battle, the group searched the Harpy nest. Inside, they discovered a lovely hoard of gold coins and a mysterious chest containing five oddly-shaped keys. These keys, they recalled, were vital to an expedition rumored to lead to the Tower on Eye Island. Just as they prepared to depart, the storm intensified - and rather poorly, too. All sound suddenly faded, and a demonic voice echoed over the crashing waves:
HOW DARE YOU KILL MY SERVANT!
Five massive tentacles erupted from the sea, grappling the adventurers. The being demanded a reason not to crush them right then and there. The party scrambled for an answer, but it was Mad Matt who offered the most shocking solution - he volunteered to serve the Kraken in place of the fallen Matriarch. Impressed by Matt’s sheer audacity, the being accepted - on one condition:
NEVER CALL ME KRAKEN AGAIN!
I AM NALZAGOTH THE STAR DEVOURER!
With that, the Great Nalzagoth released the others but pulled Mad Matt into the ocean. The storm died down, and the remaining party members frantically searched the waters for any sign of their lost friend - a truly distressing turn of events.
The Return of Mad Matt
As they gathered on the shore, Caleb attempted to light a fire with wood that was still quite dreadfully soaking wet. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the water - Mad Matt, transformed. His skin now glistened with an oily sheen, and his beard had morphed into writhing tentacles. With a display of newfound power, he extended one of his tentacles at Giacomo, who couldn’t help but comment on Matt’s new “fishy” aroma.
With his transformation complete, Mad Matt reclaimed the title of Captain from Selah, who readily agreed (after a polite nod). The crew decided to delay their trip to Fort Murray and instead return to Inderøy for a bit of a rest. Armed with the mysterious keys, they would now join the adventuring squads preparing to explore the Tower of Eye Island.
The storm may have passed, but a new adventure, and the growing shadow of Nalzagoth, looms quite large.
